Potato Chip Rock via the Mt. Woodson Trail is a 7.3 mile out and back trail near Poway. It’s heavily trafficked, so expect plenty of hikers, dog walkers, and nature seekers.

It’s a moderate hike, with 2,119ft elevation across its lengthy trail. It can be quite challenging if you’re not in great physical shape.

There’s plenty to see, including the infamous Potato Chip rock formation, the Mt. Woodson summit, and a beautiful lake too.

Be careful during hot weather, though, as the entire trail is exposed, and you’ll need to be mindful of your water supply and potential sunburn.

Because it’s so popular, there are partially paved areas, and those that aren’t paved are well kept, so it’s a simple route to follow.

2. Iron Mountain Trail

Iron Mountain Trail is a 5.2 mile out and back trail near Poway popular with hikers, runners, and dog walkers.

A moderate hike with 1,102ft of elevation, it gets busy quickly, so come early to enjoy the trail in peace and be aware that the elevation gain is pretty decent.

This trail takes you to the second-highest peak in Poway and offers beautiful panoramic views that are best enjoyed at sunrise and sunset.

It’s exposed, so bring plenty of water and sunscreen and beware the rocky portions of the trail, which require good hiking boots.

Starting on a sandy trail, it eventually becomes rocky and muddy, so be prepared for this. It’s well-developed, though, and a great hike!

3. Cedar Creek Falls Trail

Cedar Creek Falls Trail is an out and back 5.6-mile hike near Ramona, which requires a permit. It’s great for running, hiking, and reconnecting with nature.

It is a strenuous hike over 1,049ft of elevation gain. What makes the route difficult is that it runs down an exposed canyon without any shade.

You get to see a stunning 80ft waterfall with a pool at its base (if visiting in spring), as well as navigate a challenging pathway through beautiful hills.

The difficulty here is the ‘back’ part of the out and back trail, which ascends quickly, making it demanding.

There are benches along the route to help with resting, though, and with plenty of water and preparation, the trail is accessible for many keen hikers.

Lake Hodges Overlook Trail is one of the best hiking trails near Escondido. It’s a 7.3-mile loop trail that’s great for hiking, mountain biking, and horse riding.

It elevates 1,423ft over the 7.3 miles, so it’s moderately difficult for the length rather than the height.

You can see beautiful views of the lake; just be mindful of the rocky, steeper parts where there is some loose sand.

It’s heavily trafficked, so finding a parking spot may be difficult some days, but the fun day of hiking is worth the wait if necessary.

There are plenty of wildflowers and spectacular views all around, but not a lot of shade, so be prepared for that when you arrive.

Double Peak Trail from Discovery Lake is a 3.9-mile loop trail near San Marcos. Wildlife enthusiasts, hikers, and mountain bike riders all frequent this trail.

Elevating 1,026ft over a short distance, it is challenging, but being partially surfaced certainly helps. The dirt incline after this can be difficult.

There are plenty of opportunities for wildlife, beautiful views of the lake, and stunning wildflowers along the trail.

The major challenge is hiking up the trail. The way back is easier, but the first steep hike towards the peak can take it out of you.

It’s a beautifully maintained trail, though, with bathrooms and water fountains at the top of the peak, so it’s well worth the challenge.

Lake Poway Loop Trail is a 2.8-mile hike near Poway. Great for kids, dogs, and family days out all year round.

There are only 463ft of elevation gain, so the easy trail around Lake Poway is perfect for all ages and skill levels.

With beautiful views of the lake and all the stunning wildlife that goes alongside it, this trail has a lot to offer the entire family on a fun-filled day trip.

The bathrooms are in the first third of the trail, so this might be an inconvenience. But you can easily follow the route clockwise, so the bathrooms are available later on in your hike.

Nighthawk Trail to Black Mountain Summit is a 3.9 mile out and back trail near Poway. Great for dog walking and hiking.

846ft of elevation makes this trail moderately difficult, as most of the ascent is towards Black Mountain Summit, which can be challenging for less experienced hikers.

The summit has beautiful seating area to enjoy the stunning views, and the rocky trail offers a great challenge too.

Good hiking shoes are a must because of these rocky areas, which can be uncomfortable without proper footwear.

The rocky sections are broken up with wide dirt track sections, which are much more comfortable on your feet. The summit is beautifully maintained too.

8. Bernardo Mountain Summit

Another excellent example of hiking trails near Escondido is the Bernardo Mountain Summit. A 6.5 mile out and back trail popular with mountain bikers, dog walkers, and hikers.

With 1,023ft of elevation, it isn’t too difficult, and many parents achieve this alongside their children, but it may be challenging to some.

This trail offers views constantly, from the start all the way to the Summit itself, where you can see a stunning view of the nearby lake.

Bring good hiking shoes and plenty of water, as there is little shade and some rocky areas to contend with.

With excellent opportunities for bird watching, the challenging rocky trail is worth it, but make sure you come prepared so you can enjoy the views at the top comfortably.

9. Piedras Pintadas Trail

With only 1,236ft of elevation gain over 5.8 miles, it’s not a strenuous route. Yet, it still requires a good fitness level to get over a few hills and steep sections.

Surrounded by the beautiful scenery of the Blue Sky Ecological Reserve, this offers the perfect opportunity to reconnect with the restorative power of nature.

It’s a pleasant and enjoyable hike with plenty of opportunities to learn about the plant and animal life nearby.

There are plenty of signs for directions and information posts for learning about the area, and the wide dirt trail is well developed and easy to navigate too.

From the Boulder Trail Loop to the Sage and Cougar Ridge trails, every route offers unique challenges and distances but is equally stunning.

South Clevenger Canyon Trail is a 4 mile out and back trail near Ramona. Great for backpacking, hiking, and nature trips.

With 1,067ft of elevation, this can become steep in parts and is rated as moderately difficult, especially with the rocky sections of the trail.

There are plenty of places to sit and take in the stunning views at the top of the canyon trail, and the wildflowers and wildlife around here are second to none.

The rocky sections can become uncomfortable without proper footwear, and it is a little busy at times, but early morning hikes will help prevent this.

There are plenty of signs along the route, with opportunities to turn back and make it shorter if necessary. Although some areas are overgrown, the trail is mostly well-kept and easy to navigate.

Mount Gower Preserve Trail is a 9-mile loop trail near Ramona, too. Popular with scramblers, mountain bikers, and keen hikers.

The 2,178ft elevation, 9-mile distance, and rocky areas that are perfect for scrambling make this trail challenging and best reserved for experienced hikers.

This half-a-day hike is filled with stunning views as far as the coast on clear days, with minor viewpoints alongside the main vista at the top.

Conditions can become slippery on rainy days, and there is little shade on warm ones, so finding the perfect hiking time can be tricky.

Having said that, the track itself is easy to follow with clear signs, so losing the trail isn’t an issue.

14. Denk Mountain (Rancho La Costa Preserve)

Although rising by 692ft, this is still a relatively gradual ascent suitable for most skill levels, but some may find the incline difficult.

The views from the summit of Denk Mountain are breathtaking, with the nearby ocean and lagoon visible on a good day.

The path varies between single track and road width in places, so passing others is sometimes difficult, but the views from the top of Denk Mountain are unrivaled.

15. Ramona Grasslands Preserve

With only 265ft of elevation, this is an easy trail for most skill levels and is perfect for kids to experience too.

The primary appeal with this route is the wildflowers that the Ramona Grasslands Preserve is famous for, with plenty of views and wildlife spotting opportunities en route too.

Coyotes have been spotted along the route frequently, so caution is advised, especially if you’re bringing dogs.

The path is very well maintained and mostly flat aside from a few slight inclines, so it makes for a lovely walk.

16. Paradise Mountain Loop

Paradise Mountain Loop is an 8.2-mile trail near Pauma Valley, primarily used for hiking.

With 1,860ft of elevation, 8.2 miles of hiking, and overgrown and rocky areas, this is a challenging trail meant for more experienced hikers.

With views across the river, and from the summit of the mountain, this hike is stunning. There are plenty of wildflowers along the route too.

Just be aware that the rocky, overgrown sections are tricky to navigate, and there are lots of bugs to contend with in the summer months.

The trail can be misleading, too, as the signs aren’t always clear, so bring along an offline map just in case!

17. Boden Canyon Loop

Boden Canyon Loop is a 14.3-mile loop trail near Ramona, California. Runners, walkers, and hikers enjoy this trail.

Although 1,788ft over 14 miles doesn’t sound a lot, the distance and the elevation combined can make this a moderately difficult trail.

There’s plenty of wildlife, though, from turkeys and cattle, deers and quail – you’ll spot a lot along this route, and there’s even a fun section where you’ll cross a stream.

The trail isn’t easy to follow, though, and in parts seems to drop off altogether, which adds to the adventure.

It is advised to bring an offline map and stick to the signed trail where possible, and it’ll be an enjoyable hike!
